What Is Strikeball

History, rules and culture of the tactical sport

The History of Strikeball

The origins of strikeball (airsoft) trace back to the early 1970s in Japan, where private individuals were prohibited from owning firearms. The hobby offered an alternative, allowing enthusiasts to engage in firearm-related activities without owning real weapons. Since then, strikeball has spread worldwide, especially across Europe and the Americas.

An Honour-Based Sport

The defining feature of strikeball is honour. Because a plastic BB hit is difficult to verify from outside, each player acknowledges their own hits. This makes strikeball a sport built on trust and mutual respect — often described as an honour system in action.

Equipment and Safety

Safety in strikeball is achieved through mandatory protective equipment — primarily a full-face mask covering the eyes and face. Replicas fire plastic BBs at limited energy (typically no more than 1 joule), making a hit unpleasant but not injurious when rules are observed.

Strikeball in Estonia

Strikeball is very popular in Estonia — one of few countries where young people from age 13 can participate in public games. The largest organisation is N.A.C. (Naissaare Airsoft Community), which coordinates events across the country and offers rental equipment.

Tactics and Scenarios

Strikeball offers many game formats: from simple team-versus-team battles to large-scale military simulation (MilSim) events. Every scenario relies on communication, coordination and strategic thinking — making the sport compelling for beginners and experienced players alike.
